The 5G revolution: Blessing or a curse?

The 5G revolution: Blessing or a curse?

The 5G network is the latest generation of the cellular network whose primary function is to push the limits of the currently existing 4G mobile networks and offer subscribers different advantages over 4G.

There are various target services that 5G networks should be able to support which are not possible with the 4G network. Practically speaking, 5G is not just the next generation in mobile communications but also features high-level performance which will power a wide range of industries from healthcare to education, transportation to entertainment, and many more.

  • 5G will provide our healthcare with ultra reliable communication and reliable E-Health services. The E-health services, such as remote medical treatment and patient surveillance need the high availability and reliability only obtainable by the high bandwidth of 5G technology.
  • 5G will make the extreme real-time communication and advanced Robotic Control for Manufacturing Firm fully possible. These extreme real-time communications requires a maximum end-to-end delay of 1ms only. The problem of ensuring broadband access everywhere and high throughput is solved by using numerous small cells and more efficient air interface.
  • For our day to day activities, 5G will deliver a massive Internet of Things (IoT) possibilities such as smart homes, advanced AI for self-driving cars and Smart Wearable and Sensor Networks. For e.g., a traffic controller may control the operation of a traffic light based on the feedback from the sensors installed on the traffic light.
  • Extremely low latency mission critical applications, Smart cities, smart traffic controls, real-time decision making for industrial automation and digital supply chain, driver-less cars etc.
  • Broadband Access faster and everywhere with over 50Mbps even near cell edge is another impressive advantage of 5G in compare to 4G. 5G aims for the user- experienced data rate of more than 50 Mbps even near the traditional cell- edge making our day to day communication much reliable anywhere we go.
  • A very high connection density of machines is addressed by enhancing the network and device.
  • Massive machine type communications where all our machines and appliances will be automated and controlled through intelligent 5G applications.
  • Augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) to provide a larger data pipe to deliver content and services through AR and VR.

Is 5G safe or dangerous?

There are many other use cases being studied, but in summary – the motivation behind 5G is to envision a better and faster digitally connected and automated future. But as everything else in this world, 5G technology as been reported by many organisations to be harmful to our health. There are concerns this very high-frequency spectrum could pose adverse health effects for the public. The consumer anxiety concerning whether radio frequency radiation can increase the risk of cancerous tumors has and still exist for some time now. The official U.S. Food and Drug Association (FDA), a government agency that is not only responsible for protecting public health through the control and supervision of food and drugs, but also electromagnetic radiation emitting devices. We further supplemented those responses with information sourced from the American Cancer Society and the International Agency for Research on Cancer stating that they believe the current safety limits for cellphone radio frequency energy exposure remain acceptable for protecting the public health. In other words 5G technology is safe as there isn’t enough research to pinpoint their long-term health effects. Now, however, that’s also the motto the same organisation has been echoing about food additives, fast food and processed food… as still today these and many other type of chemicals and environmental harming products are not been banned. Also, and speaking about adding more fuel to the fire, other more autonomous research says the opposite, and clearly state that 5G is in fact dangerous, and the reason the 5th generation technology is dangerous is due to its RF radiation signal. There are hundreds of peer reviewed scientific studies linking RF Radiation to DNA damage and cancer (see Scientific Studies). In 2011 even the World Health Organization classified RF Radiation as “possibly carcinogenic”, meaning “cancer causing” (see IARC). 2G, 3G and 4G uses between 1 GHz to 5 GHz frequencies. 5G is even more dangerous because it uses much higher frequencies, between 24 GHz to 90 GHz says radiation health risks organisation.

Whether the 5G is dangerous or not, the technology is here to stay and will without any doubt revolutionize our industry and our future. The fifth tech generation of communications and computing will provide us with many new advancements such as intelligent connectivity, much greater connection speed, lower latency and the ability to expand beyond computers and phones to encompass the cloud and a whole new universe of devices (estimated in the billions) attached to the network. Practically speaking, 5G will one day be powerful enough to deliver smart factories and real-time virtual reality. 5G will revolutionize our technology to the extent that many scientists today believe that the future discoveries will use the technology to implement new innovative ways that will change our lives for good. So who knows, maybe 5G will even transform us into type 1 civilization cyborg humans where cancer and other diseases suddenly becomes the least of our problems. May the Force be with you!
